France has broken its daily record for new COVID-19 cases as the highly contagious Omicron variant races through the population.

The French health authority said 368,149 infections were reported within 24 hours.

The previous record, set last Wednesday, was 332,252 cases.

The number of cases in France has skyrocketed as Omicron fuels a fifth wave of COVID-19.

The sliding incidence rate in France is 2790 per 100,000 population over the past seven days.

To stem the tide, the French government plans to tighten restrictions on unvaccinated people by mid-January.

If the plan is finally approved, the Unjabbed will no longer have access to restaurants, cultural activities, and long-distance transportation.
